A Magical Evening at Westminster Abbey

Thanks to our Royal patron, Princess Alexandra, New Bridge were able to nominate two volunteer befrienders to attend the Together at Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey. Sophie and Alison were the lucky attendees, and Sophie has shared her reflections on the event.

Last week, Alison and I were delighted to attend the annual Together at Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, hosted by the Princess of Wales on behalf of the Royal Foundation. As big champions of giving back through charities such as New Bridge, it felt especially meaningful to share in an evening devoted to community, compassion and connection.

The Abbey was beautifully decorated for the service with Christmas trees dotted around, wreaths designed by Mary Berry and twinkle lights lining the path leading up to it.

Volunteers greeted guests with mince pies as we made our way inside, adding a touch of seasonal cheer before the service began.

Once the service started, we enjoyed traditional choral pieces from the Abbey's choristers, contemporary music performances from the likes of Katie Melua and readings from the Royals that captured the spirit of the season. At moments during the traditional carol singing, the congregation lit small candles filling the Abbey with a soft glow - a simple but powerful touch that made the experience feel warm and united.

I particularly enjoyed a performance by the Cornish sea shanty group - Fisherman's Friends - of I Saw Three Ships.

As we left the Abbey, we were treated to cups of warm hot chocolate. A thoughtful, final touch that perfectly rounded off a memorable and uplifting evening.
